Funny Faces Brandt's Boulevard Wallet - ChrisW World Tour

Welcome to your next stop on the ChrisW World Blog tour!  For my contribution, I picked the Brandt's Boulevard, which is one of my favorite wallets to make and also one of my most requested!  This is the first time I've ever tried it with custom knit fabric, but I think it turned out great!
This wallet is sure to bring a smile to your face!

I didn't modify the pattern at all...other than using Stiff Stuff for my body liner.  The stretchy cotton lycra fabric loses the stretch once I fused the Shape Flex 101 on it.  I did use ball point needles to sew with since that is recommended for knit, and since I'm lazy I didn't bother changing back to normal ones when I was doing the lining.  There was one point of the final topstitching where The Doctor (Janome HD3000) started to complain about the layers since I was using the ball point instead of a microtex.  I hand cranked it through and all was right with the world.
Back
The outside fabric is Funny Faces by Backstitch (good luck finding it!) and the interior is the latest release of Effervescence by Robert Kaufman.  I should have bought a bolt of this colorway, it's an amazing rainbow!
It's a crazy rainbow of awesome!
Rainbow zipper from Sew Da Kine was a perfect finish!
Detachable strap
Other side of the strap
Part of the request for the order was to feature the Ariel and Elsa combination since they reminded her of her own children...so I took every chance I could to get them on!
On the back this worked perfect!
On the strap closure
And now onto the best part of the blog tour, FREE STUFF!!  Thanks to all the sponsors!  Be sure to visit their shops and give them a little love ;)
Ariel is super excited to see who wins!

  6. My craziest fail...Not leaving an opening in lining to "birth" the bag!!! Yikes

  7. What was your funniest/craziest sewing fail?
In the late 1980's, I made a full on western shirt for hubby, long sleeves, cuffs, collar, yoke, snaps everything, out of knit jersey! Yup! It was a T-shirt: western style! He wore it once, said it was hotter than hades, and the saddest part, one washing and the fabric totally pilled! Those ugly bobbles of fuzz, all over the shirt. Into the rag pile it went!

    1. Oh no!! I made my oldest a beautiful 'princess' style dress out of tafeta when she was 2 and she loved it every second I was working on it, then when she tried it on, decided it was too 'itchy' and never wore it. I seriously cried after that and decided they get store bought costumes until they are old enough to appreciate it! LOL

  8. Funniest fail was finishing the Penny Inn wallet and finding a pocket under my sewing machine the next day. I hadn’t realized I was one pocket short.

  13. Funny mistake.. too many to list.. You would think after decades of sewing it would all be perfect.

  14. Mistakes.....every single one on ChrisW's wallet video. Some, multiple times. LOL

  15. Awesome wallet! :-) love the colors and well just everything about it!

  16. Forgot about funny mistakes...at the time no mistakes are funny, but I think putting the directional fabric up side down on a coat and sending it to someone as a gift without realizing is on top ;-)

  17. I have way to many to tell. I do everything the hard way!

  18. While I was living in Japan I bought this really cute dinosaur fabric to make shorts for my 2 boys. I love love this fabric so I was nervous about cutting it. I finally decided to make the shorts after school had started this year and after being home for over a year now! After cutting the pieces for both sizes I realized that the print was upside down! I went ahead and sewed one of the shorts completely and figured my boy can use them as play shorts. It never fails though I always mess up on something when I'm sewing. Luckily I had bought 3 meters (about 3 yards) so I have plenty to make the shorts the right way. Haha

  19. Such a cute wallet and I love the fabrics!! I have never made a wallet before.

  20. When I first got my new sewing machine I decided to sew a new bag. I had no idea how to sew so I was just making it up as I went along. First, I sewed the front and back piece together right side to wrong side. After unpicking that I made another two attempts before I got it right. I didn't know how to sew a lining so all of the raw edges were on show inside. I still used the bag though! It was a bit scruffy but it was fun and a bit 'boho' too.

  21. Probably not unzipping a zipper to turn the bag. Many fails actually!

    ReplyDelete
  22. fails become new designs...like...I meant to do that...really lol

  23. Craziest fail: Using Fabri-tac glue to hold my bag straps in place and then finding out that one out of 4 straps that spanned from the bottom to the top of the bag was totally in the wrong place. I tried using Goo-Off to get the glue out of the fabric, but that just created a huge oil mark on the fabric that no matter how many times I washed that area with Dawn dish shop (it works for the birds in the oil right!) it never really came out that well and didn't really take out all the glue.

  24. Most of my fails are not understanding a pattern correctly. I mistakenly sewed the zipper pouch completely perfect, but not on the bag! oops

  25. Love the bubble fabric so cute!

My funniest fail has to be when i sewed my first pair of leggings. I attached the legas wrong so the on side was backwards. Thankfully it was cheaper fabric because I was not going to seam rip those.

  26. I put perfect straps on a bag with the straps going over the bag instead of one to a side. Looks like a stirrup.

  27. I tried ironing my embossed vinyl, I was just not thinking, I so know better.

  31. My funniest sewing fail I will never forget. That is, because even tjough it was a fail, I gave it to someone who keeps reminding me of my backwards fin fish. When I first started sewing, I made pillows, and I think everyone has. I had this comforter with all kinds of tropical fish on it and I wanted to make a fish pillow. Well thinking that I needed to draw it backwards, so to speak, becaise of turning it inside out, I drew the fins on backwards. Needless to say, it was one sorry looking fish. How did a friend get the fish? I decided to give them my comforter along with the backward fin fish that I made.

  32. I remember showing a student how to repair a knee on jeans and realized that I had sewed my blouse to the repair....love that fabric ....

  33. I love this wallet sew much! The fabric is perfect.

  34. I love Effervesance. My funnest fail was when I wanted to turn a bag though the pocket but forget to leave the bottom pocket in sewn. Not only that, I thought I was being clever so used a long piece of fabric so I would only have to sew 3 sides. Bag was completely inside out and all sewn up. Lesson to self, don't sew when I'm tired.

  36. Love the fabric in this wallet! Just too cute! Worst fail- making a blouse where everything fit except the bust area- perfect figure delusion-heads up to "pear" figures, lol! Thank you, Susan

  37. Crazy Rainbow of Awesome, indeed! The inside is marvellous!

  38. Love this wallet and I need one! My worst failure was ironing a large sheet of Heat & Bond to the wrong side of the fabric. Eeek!

    ReplyDelete
  39. worst fail to date is cutting out two sleeves at once not realizing the bottom layer of fabric had a chunk out of it. One long sleeve and one missing a big portion from one side.

  40. I love this wallet! And the fabric is so cute!

  41. That fabric is so fun and so cute! I seem to be a bit spatially challenged and always seem to end up with upside down pieces.

    1. Let's try again, didn't answer the full question before I hit publish...that could be a fail of sorts. LOL.

Actually, my worst fail was when I was making my daughters bridemaid's dresses. I had eight to make, five of one style, two of another, and one for a junior bridesmaid. First fail was sewing the right side front skirt to the wrong side back skirt. At least that was an easy fix. The worst was a zipper that no matter how hard I tried (4 attempts) I couldn't get it to lay flat, the design of the dress and proportions of the person wearing it just weren't compatible. I ended up convincing my daughter to pick a completely new pattern and everyone was much happier and all looked lovely.

  43. I love that rainbow zipper! My 6 yo would be all over them! My biggest fail way probably a tunic intended for drapey Jersey but used a cotton Lycra. It looked awful! I still haven't fixed it.
